There are a few homeopathic remedies which are particularly helpful if used for an early symptom or straight after an injury. It is worth having these always available.

Many people are familiar with the use of homeopathic remedies for minor ailments or first aid. It is therefore sensible for them to have remedies for this sort of thing available immediately and at all times. This is particularly advisable if one is on holiday in a foreign country, perhaps where it would be difficult to obtain medical treatment as easily and quickly as at home. So which remedies should one carry? Here are six which the author has found to be extremely useful.

Arnica

This is the Number One remedy for accidents, shock or physical exhaustion. It should be a first choice after any injury, minor or more serious, and is particularly good for soft tissue injuries such as bruises, strains, or sprains. Given early it will reduce swelling and bruising, or sometimes prevent it altogether. It is also excellent after dental treatment, particularly tooth extractions.

Aconite

This is an excellent remedy for nipping colds in the bud. It is very useful if one feels a cold coming on, and will sometimes prevent it developing at all. It is also a useful remedy for shock or fear, and can be helpful if given in conjunction with arnica after an accident or injury.

Arsenicum Album

This is a remedy primarily for food poisoning. It is useful for any kind of stomach upset, and is worth trying if someone has diarrhoea or vomiting.

Hypericum

Hypericum is an excellent first aid treatment for any injury involving nerves. This includes lacerated wounds caused by sharp instruments, or any injury to nerve-rich areas, eg slamming a door on the fingers or falling on the coccyx. It is also reputed to have anti-tetanus properties.

Apis

This is the Number One remedy for bites and stings. It should be taken immediately after being stung or bitten by any kind of insect. However, in the case of a severe allergic reaction it is also important for the patient to obtain medical treatment as soon as possible.

Nux Vomica

This is a good remedy for hangovers, or for over-indulgence in rich food or food to which one is unaccustomed. It can also be useful for travel sickness.

Where to Keep Homeopathic Remedies

For a handbag kit, it is best to obtain the smallest size of pillule and tube. Most specialist homeopathic companies can supply these, and they often have containers to keep them in as well. In the UK, remedies can be obtained from Helios Homoeopathy, and small handbag-sized hard containers for six remedies from the Homeopathic Supply Company, both of which will supply by mail order if required.

It is important to remember that not all homeopathic remedies will work for everyone. Even when used for first aid, the constitution and personality of the person will make a difference. However, these six remedies are a good start. The user can then adapt his or her own mini-kit with experience.
